Methane gas is a colorless, odorless, tasteless, flammable gas. Methane gas is the major constituent of natural gas and coal gas. The concentration of methane is shipped as a nonliquefied compressed gas in cylinders. As a component of natural gas, methane gas is widely used as a fuel. In the chemical industry, methane gas is used in the manufacture of acetylene, ammonia, ethanol and methanol. Methane gas is also used in the manufacture of carbon black for use in rubber products and printing inks.
