Both liquefied and gaseous xenon are used as a detection medium. The ionization of xenon is a means for gamma-ray and x-ray spectroscopy. Xenon's density makes it an ideal resource for medical diagnostics, material density profiling, and detection of radiation sources for Homeland Security.
Xenon is also being evaluated to indirectly confirm the existence of "dark matter." This dark matter is said to be abundant enough to dominate the universe. Dark matter refers to indirectly observed particles of unknown composition that do not emit or reflect enough electromagnetic radiation, but whose existence can instead be inferred through the detectable effects it has on visible matter.
